Patient Care Technician (Cna) 7P-7A Job Description

Specialty Hospital is a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) specializing in the treatment of seriously ill, medically complex patients that require hospitalization for longer periods of time, with an average stay of 3-4 weeks. This provides necessary time to focus on a patient’s recovery to their fullest potential, and is one of the factors that distinguish Specialty Hospital from short acute care hospitals. This fully-licensed and accredited hospital is the only one of its kind in Jacksonville, and one of approximately 460 such hospitals nationwide. Specialty Hospital offers specialized, interdisciplinary, compassionate programs in a medical environment that integrates healing and recovery through four main programs of excellence: Cardiopulmonary Program - ventilator and/or tracheostomy weaning and complications of chronic lung disease; Wound Management Program - decubitus, circulatory, and diabetic ulcers, and non-healing surgical wounds; Infectious Disease Program - treatment of multiple infectious disease processes; and Complex Medical/Rehabilitative Program – provide intensive medical management.
 
 
Summary of Position Goals and Duties:
 
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), under the direction of the nurse, assists in providing nursing care to a designated group of patients.  The patient care technician assists the patient in performing activities of daily living and monitoring the patient for specific needs.  The PCT/CNA will assist the nurse in completing complex treatments for the patient and to follow the direction of the nurse in completing various tasks associated with the nursing care for the designated group of patients.  The Patient Care Technician will also tend to the patient’s individual needs while attempting to encourage the patient to reach a higher level of independence.

Patient Findings and Documentation
1.  Obtains& records accurate vital signs, accuchecks, and I&O
2.  Reportschanges in patient's condition immediately to nurse
3.  Communicates on an on-going basis, to includebeginning, during & end of shift
4.  Reportsabnormal findings immediately
 
Patient Safety
1.  Identifiespatient using 2 identifiers
2.  CompletesPCT – PCT rounding at beginning & end of shift
3.  Followsthe 3 P’s for all patients (pain, positioning, potty)
4.  Utilizesmedical equipment appropriately
5.  Completesrestraint documentation on rounds
6.  Followspatient transfer status as posted
7.  Responds appropriately to patient alarms and callbells
8.  Reports any patient safety concerns to the primarynurse, i.e.: patient at risk to fall

Patient Nutrition
1. Reinforces patient & family with dietary education
2.  Assistspatient with meal trays and feeding & documents appropriately
3.  Followsall swallowing & feeding precautions
4.  Documents& notifies nurse of any feeding issues
 
Role Responsibilities
1.   Completes all activities of daily living forpatients & documents appropriately
2.  Completes assignments in a timely manner& utilizes time effectively
3.  Prioritizes assignment of patient care on anongoing basis through shift
4.  Completes preventative care related to skinand infection prevention
5.  Assists with wound care treatments asappropriate
6.  Obtains lab specimens perpolicy

Patient Care Technician (Cna) 7P-7A Job Requirements

EDUCATION: 
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • A Certified Nurse Assistant training course is strongly preferred
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: 
  • A current state of Florida issued Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) License is required; or a previous Military Corpsman, or a current nursing student having completed the first clinical coursein the hospital setting, or proof of licensure as a nurse in a country outsidethe United States is required
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card is required
  • A dysrythmia course by the end of first year of employment at Specialty Hospital is required
EXPERIENCE:
  • Some previous Customer Service experience is required
  • 6 months experience in a patient care setting (especially previous hospital experience) is strongly preferred
